Hang On To The Ultimate Bag!
08/08/2008
In June last year we held our first ‘plastic bag free trek’ in Ladakh, India with Scope. All trekkers were given one of these Fair Trade cotton shoulder bags to use while shopping in local markets, in place of plastic bags. Plastic bags are difficult to recycle and can pollute the pristine landscapes we visit.
The bags were a great success and so we are now offering one to each of our charity participants. They will be handed out at the airport on departure.
The bags are made in Nepal, by women who have been rescued from human trafficking and exploitation. Once returned to their native country these women are still in a very vulnerable position. Liable to be shunned by their own communities they are often unable to read or write, and find it almost impossible to gain work. The production of these bags helps to support skills training and rehabilitation for the women – giving them the opportunity to change their lives for the better and stand on their own two feet.
This has been such a worthwhile project for The Ultimate Travel Company to get involved with, reinforcing the commitment we make to our ethical code. Our events can make a big impact on local communities and the beautiful environments we travel to. Using these bags is just one small step we can take to ensure the impression we leave is a positive one.
