On the border between Thailand and Myanmar (Burma), this remote lush jungle area is Thailand’s highest mountain region and provides a stunning trekking challenge off the beaten track. The Old Elephant Trail, set up in 1851 was once a very busy trade route over the mountains between Mae Hong Son and Chiang Mai. The route is now little used, but what remain is many traditional Karen and Hmong Hilltribe villages, unchanged for centuries, set against this beautifully lush, mountain backdrop.
