Mount Everest (29035ft / 8850m) is the highest mountain in the world, known by the Tibetan name Chomolangma (Goddess Mother of the Snows) and by the Nepali name Sagarmatha (Mother of the Universe). On our stunning 14 day trek you will explore the lower majesty of the Everest region, before walking in the footsteps of Hillary and Norgay to their base camp at Gorek Shep.
The first seven attempts on Everest, starting in 1921, approached the mountain from Tibet. All were unsuccessful. George Mallory, who spearheaded the first three expeditions, lost his life with Andrew Irvine during a failed ascent in 1924.
Unsuccessful attempts continued through 1938, then halted during World War II. By the end of the war, Tibet had closed its borders and Nepal, previously inaccessible, became the starting point. Starting in 1951, expeditions from Nepal grew closer and closer to the summit, via the Khumbu Icefall, the Western Cwm, the South Col, and up the Southeast Ridge. In 1953 Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay reached the summit.
On this stunning 14 day trek you will explore the lower majesty of the Everest region, before walking in the footsteps of Hillary and Norgay to the original base camp at Gorek Shep. Along the way, you will witness ancient Tibetan Buddhism as you visit and learn and become inspired from our guides. Your journey to these sacred regions will offer a lifetime of impressions and reflections. Most days are nothing short of breath-taking while you walk amidst the Himalayan giants to the jingle of yak bells.
