Charity Factsheet: LOROS, the Leicestershire and Rutland Hospice

LOROS, the Leicestershire and Rutland Hospice,

provides care for terminally-ill patients throughout both counties. LOROS is a local charity, run by local people for the benefit of local patients. Most patients referred to LOROS are in the advanced stages of cancer but LOROS also takes patients with motor neurone disease, end-stage heart, kidney and respiratory failure for whom curative treatment is no longer possible.

The centre of the organisation is at the hospice, off Groby Road, Leicester, which has thirty-one in-patient beds where specialist pain relief and symptom control are provided. The aim of the care is to enhance the quality of life both for the patient and the family.

Patients, some as young as eighteen years, are visited at and supported in their own homes by our team of Clinical Nurse Specialists and our team of family support visitors. A range of services and therapies are available at the Palliative Day Therapy Unit at Manor Croft in the Stoneygate area of Leicester. LOROS also has clinics for the treatment of lymphoedema at the hospice.

• All of the LOROS services are offered free to patients and their families. Patients are accepted on the basis of medical need irrespective of their individual circumstances.

• The care and services provided by LOROS currently cost £6.17 million annually (this equates to £12.00 per minute of every day). A minimum of £4.0 million is required from voluntary fundraising and donations.

• LOROS is rightly proud that just over 92p in every £1 donated goes directly to patient care.

Key to the past success has been the ongoing support of the local community and businesses, both financially and in other ways.

Our next stage of development is to provide eleven new single patient rooms. The scheme will not increase the number of beds overall but it will mean that over half of the patient beds will be in single rooms. The development of this extension requires a capital fund of £2.0 million. This is a one off sum. It is, however, in addition to the voluntary income currently being raised by the charity each year to meet the running costs.

We are, therefore, seeking significant donations from generous benefactors in order to meet this capital cost. There are opportunities for substantial donors to name rooms in the new wing in acknowledgement of their gifts.
