Charity Factsheet:
Sense International
Sense International is the only organisation in the world working exclusively to meet the needs of deafblind people in the developing world, people we believe to be among the poorest and most marginalized people in society.
Deafblindness is a combination of vision and hearing impairments. Because 95% of what we learn about the world comes through sight and hearing, deafblind people face enormous challenges. However, with expert support and education it is perfectly possible for a deafblind person to learn to communicate, to gain employment and to lead a quality life.
Unfortunately however, in most countries in the world that expert support does not exist. There is little awareness about deafblindness and few, if any, services. Too often no-one knows how many deafblind people there are, where they are or what happens to them. Many thousands of children remain in total isolation at home or in institutions.
Sense International’s vision is a world in which all deafblind children and adults can be full and active members of society. Our aim is to ensure that all deafblind people have access to advice, opportunities and support that will enable them to lead fulfilling lives. We do this by working in partnership with governments, voluntary organisations and their communities to support services and activities required by deafblind people. We currently work in East Africa, Central and Eastern Europe, India and Latin America.
"Taking part in a Sense International trek was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I was part of a team of people who were all working together, to support each other for an amazing cause. Anyone who wants to support a great cause and is up for an adventure should sign up for a Sense International trek today!."
