Charity Factsheet:
Prince & Princess of Wales Hospice
The Prince & Princess of Wales Hospice, a community-based Hospice in Glasgow, provides fully integrated specialist palliative care including clinical, emotional and spiritual care to terminally ill patients and support to their families. Founded in the early 1980’s and situated in the city centre, the Hospice covers the Greater Glasgow area, which regrettably has an above-average incidence of cancer, within the context of the United Kingdom.
All of the Hospice’s patients are treated free of charge, regardless of their financial circumstances. Whilst there is welcome support from the Greater Glasgow Health Board, the Hospice relies heavily on charitable income for the greater part of it’s funding. It takes in the order of £2.6 million a year, of which £1.6 million needs to come from voluntary donations, to maintain the range of services and care programmes for which the Hospice is renowned.
Our first fundraising trek with the Ultimate Travel Company was in Nepal in 2000 and since then we have been to The Great Wall of China, Peru, Vietnam and Kilimanjaro. So far we have made in excess of £220,000 for the Hospice from the overseas treks and it is a very significant source of income for us.
In addition to the money raised, trekking helps us attract supporters who may not otherwise respond to the more traditional methods of fundraising, and we do find that a number of trekkers continue to support the Hospice on their return.
