National Centre for Young People with Epilepsy
Epilepsy affects over 75,000 children and young people in the UK. For some 15,000 epilepsy can be a life shattering condition, with profound repercussions on their emotional, social and intellectual development. For these young people specialised care, education, assessment and treatment is crucial.
The National Centre for Young People with Epilepsy (NCYPE), a registered charity, based in Lingfield, Surrey is the major provider of these specialised services to young people throughout the UK. NCYPE provides a day and residential school, a further education college, an on-site medical centre, epilepsy assessment and rehabilitation services. NCYPE works in partnership with Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Trust (GOSH) and the Institute of Child Health (ICH).
During 2003 significant progress was made in relation to NCYPE’s mission to champion the cause of young people with epilepsy everywhere. Under the patronage of HRH The Prince of Wales, NCYPE and its partners, GOSH and ICH, the appeal to fund Europe's first Chair in Childhood Epilepsy achieved its target of £1.5 million. In the second phase of this appeal, NCYPE aims to raise the funds necessary to build a new state-of-the-art medical unit to house its diagnostic and treatment facilities as well as academic and research accommodation to support the Chair.
The Chair and the new medical, assessment and research centre are an exciting development, which have helped raise the sights and purpose of NCYPE.
In 2005 we undertook our first overseas trek in Nepal to help us raise vital funds for this project.
