Egypt: Mt Sinai Desert Trek

Egypt is the fabled land of the Pharaohs where the silent deserts are bordered by the blue waters of the Mediterranean to the north and the Red Sea to the east.

Our adventure begins in Cairo, Africa’s largest city, where east meets west and ancient meets modern in a vibrant melting pot of history and culture.

Leaving Cairo we transfer to the Sinai desert, for the start of our trek. The Sinai is the route to the Promised Land, where Isis sought Osiris and the Pharaohs found gold. It is where Moses is said to have received the Ten Commandments and where the Bedouins camped by Crusader forts.

Stars fill the cold night sky as our challenge begins. Following our Bedouin guides and camel trail, we trek up the beautiful granite slopes of Mt Sinai (2285m), reaching the summit as dawn breaks across the rocky desert.

On our descent we visit Saint Catherine Monastery – a defining feature of the Holy Land and a site sacred to Christianity and Islam. The Monastery houses irreplaceable works of art and ancient manuscripts and a sixth century chapel reputed to be built on the site of the burning bush.

Over the next two days we enjoy a rare desert experience, as we trek through this remarkable land, soaking up the intense silence of the mountains around us, witnessing spectacular sunsets, and spending our nights camping Bedouin style. Our incredible weekend concludes with a spectacular visit to one of the Seven Wonders of the World - the great Pyramids of Giza - and Sphinx.

Day 04: El Zawatin – Farsh Umm Sila (4h)
Day 05: Farsh Umm Sila – Farsh El Roman – El Zawatin – St Catherine (2-3h)
Day 05: Transfer St Catherine – Cairo
Day 06: Cairo - Pyramids - London
