Öræfajökull is an ice-covered volcano in south-east Iceland. It's the largest active volcano in the country and on its north-western rim is Hvannadalshnúkur, the highest peak in Iceland. Geographically Öræfajökull is considered part of the Vatnajökull glacier, which is within the bounds of Skaftafell National Park. The ascent is a challenge, but the rewards bring you breathtaking views across Vatnajökull and southeast Iceland, and the incredible experience of hiking through a glacial wilderness. We ascend on the North West side of the crater up to the peak of Hvannadalshnúkur, with the aid of crampons and ice axe. (Everyone will be given a full briefing and training on how to use crampons whilst we are on the glacier). An incredible glacial experience and challenge!
